SCAR PRINTS for Burn Survivors: One-day workshop

SCAR PRINTS FOR BURN SURVIVORS

IN-PERSON ONLY

As burn survivors, we often call our scars the “stories we wear on our sleeves.” But just like stories are made of more than words, our scars illustrate our experiences visually in shape, line, and color. In this one-day workshop, we gather as a community to create art directly from our burn scars and in doing so we will invite a new way of looking at our burns and ourselves. The scar print, a type of body print, is created by rolling ink directly onto the skin and then printing the inked skin onto paper. It is gentle, non-toxic, and the results are exquisite. Like a map on paper, your scar print is a direct recording of the individual shapes and patterns of your skin. Through instructor-guided demonstration, you will create your own prints and rediscover your burns as unique works of art. Join us for a day of creativity and community!

Question: WHO IS THIS FOR?

Answer: YOU!

All adult burn survivors (18 years +) are welcome. It is, however, strongly recommended that your burn scars be completely healed prior to the workshop. Burn survivors are optionally invited to bring a +1 support companion. There are no limits to what you can print — a scar from your head, stomach, back, arm, leg, hand, etc. — as long as you are willing to open yourself to the creative process, this workshop is for you.

Limit: 12 participants

This workshop is FREE for all participants thanks to Pratt Fine Art Center and funding from the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. By registering for this workshop, you consent to be photographed for promotional purposes only, as required by the grant.

THE DETAILS:

The workshop begins with a series of facilitated community-building activities to orient ourselves to the Pratt classroom space and get to know each other. Activities will include a meditation, introduction games, community intention-setting, creative writing, small group story sharing, etc. Then the instructor will demonstrate how to create a scar print and discuss topics such as: choosing a meaningful scar to print, layering colors, adding words or shapes onto the print, and how to wash-up (don’t worry, it’s easy with soap and water!).

After the demonstration, you are invited to make your own scar prints! Depending on each individuals’ preferences, participants can ink and print with the group or have the opportunity work solo behind a privacy screen. The instructor will assist as needed one-on-one.

What to expect:

All supplies provided. Just bring yourself, be open, and have fun!

Including aprons and disposable gloves.

Lunch will be provided

Be sure to list your dietary preferences when you register.

Emotions may come up!

This is a supportive environment, just for burn survivors. Even if your burn injury was a long time ago, any creative endeavor has the potential to stir new emotions. The workshop is designed to create a safe container in which you can experiment and play!

You may need a buddy!

If you want to print a hard-to-reach scar, bring a trusted buddy to help you! The instructor will be available to assist with your consent.

You will get messy!

You WILL get ink on your body! And likely on your clothing. We use water-based non-toxic ink. It will wash out of clothing, but it may stain. Loose fitting, dark colored clothing is best. Consider what you want to print, and dress accordingly.
